Is Antidepressant Medication Safe?
Modern times have brought about the acceptance and diagnosis of many different ailments, such as various mental conditions like depression. With these different diagnoses, come the treatments and medications. Lately, one out of five television commercials in an hour block, is an advertisement for some form of antidepressant or another. The information is accessible for anybody who feels that they or someone they know suffers from depression, but are antidepressant medications safe?
Prozac has always been a famous medication for severe depression, and is a quick releasing drug for mood regulation. It is also prescribed to women who suffer from PMDD. However, side effects can be a hassle with this antidepressant. Like most medications some of the side effects are a rarity, but are there nonetheless and can occur. Some of the side effects of taking Prozac are, diminished sex drive, night terrors or abnormal dreams, weakness, drowsiness and tremors.
Effexor is a newer antidepressant medication that is prescribed for life altering forms of depression. It is highly addictive, and is supposed to be taken frequent times daily, causing dependency in depression patients. The side effects, like Prozac, include abnormal dreams, diminished sex drive, weight gain, and tremors. Dry mouth and appetite increase and (or) decrease may occur as well.
Another popular antidepressant is Zoloft. Zoloft is prescribed for moderate depression, but if used incorrectly can escalate moderate depression into a more severe disorder. Clinical studies proved that children or teens on Zoloft had a tendency to developing suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Some adults have also experienced heightened intensities in their depression symptoms. Zoloft has also been known to trigger a condition that is known as "Mania", and manic episodes can be dangerous for the patient and those around them.
If you suffer from depression, that hinders your day-to-day life, sometimes the pros do outweigh the cons, and a clinical need will come before the need to deal with the side effects of any particular treatment. The best advice is to just do as much research on the drugs you are being prescribed. Antidepressant medications can not only be dangerous if used incorrectly, or if you have an allergy, but they can also be useful in maintaining a healthy, and fulfilling life, when depression would otherwise leave you unable to enjoy life.
